The rumor started, as the best rumors do, with a grain of truth and a ceiling. By the time it reached us, the Supreme Leader of Iran had reportedly become part of the ceiling tiles.

Here is what was actually reported. Iran International, citing two sources inside Iran, reported that just hours after Israel launched its large-scale military operation against Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took refuge in a special underground bunker in the Lavizan district in northeast Tehran — with his family. Zamin.uz, carrying the report on June 17, 2025, added that the same bunker had sheltered Khamenei during the April and October 2024 operations. Matzav, carrying the same Iran International report, added the detail that made the story: a regional diplomatic source said Israel deliberately chose not to target Khamenei on the first night, hoping to give him one last opportunity to abandon his nuclear enrichment efforts. Reuters, meanwhile, reported that President Trump had vetoed an Israeli plan to assassinate him.

So: the most wanted man in the Middle East spent the war in a basement in Lavizan, guarded, hidden, and — according to the rumor mill — gradually merging with the architecture. This is how bunker stories always go. First he is in a bunker. Then he is in a bunker complex. Then he is in a bunker complex with his family. Then someone, somewhere, upgrades him to a load-bearing wall, a ventilation shaft, and finally, inevitably, the ceiling tiles.

The joke writes itself because the truth already did the setup. A man who spent decades building a nuclear program, a proxy network, and a reputation for untouchability ended up hiding under Tehran while jets flew overhead, spared not by his defenses but by his enemies' decision to give him one last chance. The ceiling tiles are the punchline. The bunker is the receipt.

For the full timeline of the war he was hiding from, see WWIII on Pause. Timeout Called. — the twelve days of fighting, the ceasefire, and the friendly plane wave that ended it. Khamenei, as far as anyone can report, is still part of the building. The building, as far as anyone can tell, is still standing. The rumor, as always, is doing just fine on its own.
