Paris has renewed its favourite subscription: the whole city, in bed by eleven.

On Friday, the Paris Police Prefecture ordered a curfew for the Place de la République and Châtelet-Les Halles sectors, from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the nights of Saturday to Sunday and Sunday to Monday. It applies to adults and minors alike, with exceptions for residents, people who work in the zones, and emergency services. A separate 9 p.m. curfew covers unaccompanied minors for three nights across the weekend.

This is not a premiere. Paris ran the same two neighbourhoods on the same bedtime last weekend, and the weekend before that the curfews were spreading city to city. The cause has not changed either: on October 17, the sidelines of the cost-of-living protests turned into rioting and looting, and shops across France paid for it.

So the Halloween plan in central Paris now reads: costume on, party over, home by eleven. The rioters wrecked October. Now everyone gets a bedtime.
