There is a new clinic at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, and its business model is an apology with a budget. The hospital that performed gender-transition interventions now funds, for free, the clinic for undoing them.
The clinic opened October 26 under a settlement Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton secured in May. The hospital paid $10 million to resolve claims over billing Texas Medicaid for gender-transition interventions, and the deal requires it to fully fund the detransition clinic's services for its first five years, so patients pay nothing. Paxton calls it the nation's first detransition clinic. That is his claim, carried as his claim, and it is doing a lot of work in the press release.
The clinic offers endocrinology, surgery, primary care, fertility counseling, psychiatry, psychology, social work, case management, and speech pathology. Care runs through age 21, with detransition-related OB/GYN care for older patients. It is, in other words, a full-service reversal department inside the same institution that did the original work, which is either accountability or irony with a waiting room.
Two distinctions matter, because the internet will blur both within the hour. The hospital admits no wrongdoing under the settlement, and the Medicaid-billing allegations were the attorney general's claims in a settled case, not a court finding. The joke here is the institution paying to reverse its own work, not the patients, who deserve a clinic that actually helps them without becoming a punchline themselves.

For years, the establishment line was that this was all settled, safe, and irreversible only in the sense that nobody wanted to talk about reversing it. Now the settlement funds the conversation for five years, free of charge. The hospital built the on-ramp. It is now paying for the off-ramp, too.
