On March 30, 2023, after a Manhattan grand jury indicted Donald Trump in the hush money case, Rep. Ilhan Omar issued a statement. "Our democracy rests on the rule of law," she wrote. "Make no mistake: the fact that one of the most powerful people in the world was investigated impartially and indicted is testament to the fact that we still live in a nation of laws. And no one is above the law." It was not her first use of the line. She had posted "No one is above the law" back in November 2019, and in a September 2019 CNN interview she had said Trump believed he was above the law while welcoming the impeachment inquiry.

On October 12, 2026, HSI agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant at Omar's own Washington home as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. Her response opened with the same three words she used in 2023: "Make no mistake." This time they led into a very different sentence. "This is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement," she wrote on X. "For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns."

The internet did what the internet does. The Minnesota Republican Party did not bother writing its own statement and simply reposted Omar's 2023 words: "We couldn't agree more, Congresswoman. We're sure you still feel the same way now that it's your front door." The Trump War Room account posted the six words with no comment at all. Libs of TikTok added the detail Omar's post skipped: it was an authorized search warrant approved by a federal judge as part of a criminal investigation. Nobody is obliged to enjoy being investigated. But the standard Omar articulated so clearly in 2023 did not include an exception for the speaker, and three years later the standard showed up at her door to collect.
