On Sunday, November 9, 2025, eight Senate Democrats broke ranks and voted to advance the funding deal that ended the longest government shutdown in American history. The 60-40 vote cleared the way to reopen the government through January 30, 2026. The price of the deal: the party's central demand — extending the Affordable Care Act subsidies — was traded for a promise of a vote in December that even Democrats said would fail.

The revolt inside the party was instant and loud. Sen. Bernie Sanders called it "a very, very bad vote" and told followers "tonight was a very bad night." Rep. Greg Casar, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, called the deal a "betrayal" and a "capitulation." Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez asked what the 43-day standoff had been for, adding, "we cannot enable this kind of cruelty with our cowardice."

The harshest verdicts came from Democrats running for office in 2026. Texas Senate candidate Colin Allred called the deal a "joke" that "sells out working people." Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton called it a "complete betrayal of the American people." Michigan's Abdul El-Sayed said a promise "is only as good as the trust you have in the folks making the promise," and former AOC chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti called for Schumer and "the entire democratic leadership" to step down — "and if they run for re-election, we need to primary them."

The detail that sealed the comedy: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer himself voted against the deal, calling it "nothing" on the health care crisis. The eight defectors who crossed the aisle — King, Kaine, Durbin, Fetterman, Hassan, Shaheen, Cortez Masto, and Rosen — all had one thing in common: none of them faces voters in 2026.
