The Department of Justice has charged two former senior FBI officials — Nikki Floris, 46, and Bradley Benavides, 56 — each with one count of making false statements to Congress (18 U.S.C. § 1001(a)(2)) for allegedly lying in 2023 House Judiciary testimony about the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force and its role in the Hunter Biden laptop investigations. Both surrendered on arrest warrants Friday morning and made their first appearance in D.C. federal court the same day.

According to the criminal complaint, Benavides told Congress he learned of the Hunter Biden laptop investigation from Wikipedia — while evidence shows he was regularly discussing the laptop with FBI officials in the lead-up to the 2020 election. Floris allegedly told the committee she had no involvement in the Hunter Biden investigation, despite discussing it routinely within the task force for more than a year. Both were warned at the time that lying to Congress is a crime.

The charges were filed by criminal complaint, not a grand-jury indictment; a follow-up hearing is scheduled for Tuesday. Floris's attorneys deny wrongdoing, calling the charges false and politically motivated, filed on the eve of an election.

A senior FBI intelligence official learned about the most investigated laptop in American history the same way you learned that the Treaty of Versailles ended World War I. The Bureau will presumably be updating its training materials.
