He said the quiet part out loud.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) lost his May 19 Republican primary to Trump-endorsed challenger Ed Gallrein — and the money trail behind that loss is now the story. The race drew $26.4 million in independent expenditures, per FEC Schedule E filings compiled by SignalPAC, making it the most expensive House primary in American history. House primaries rarely break $5 million. This one broke $26 million.

The spending had a clear direction. AIPAC's super PAC, which labeled Massie the "most anti-Israel Republican in the House," poured more than $4 million into defeating him, per campaign finance records cited by Zeteo. A separate anti-Massie super PAC, created by Trump allies and heavily funded by pro-Israel billionaires, spent another $5.6 million. The Daily Caller put total advertising spending at a record $32 million. Massie, a seven-term incumbent known for bucking his party on foreign aid and foreign wars, had framed the race as a referendum on "whether Israel gets to buy seats in Congress."

Massie's own verdict, delivered on camera after the loss: "My election kind of showed you who's in charge. The people with the money, the lobbyists are in charge."

The numbers back the bitterness. PACs spent $9.4 million specifically opposing Massie — the second-highest single-candidate opposition total in any primary on record — while Gallrein attracted $13.5 million in total outside support, making him the most-funded candidate in the field and, as SignalPAC put it, "the one the money clearly wanted to win." Gallrein won 54.9% to 45.1%.

The catalyst was public. After Massie announced he would vote against a government funding bill in March 2025, Trump posted that Massie "SHOULD BE PRIMARIED, and I will lead the charge against him." The financial machinery followed — spending on a single House district comparable to competitive Senate races.

None of this is disputed by the winners. AIPAC openly celebrated Gallrein's victory. The lobby didn't just participate in the most expensive House primary in history — it took a victory lap afterward.

Massie's summary stands: you vote, the money spends, the lobby keeps the seat.
