There was a time, not long ago, when calling a Democrat a socialist was an insult you lobbed from the other side of the aisle. Now it is a self-description, worn by about a third of the party's own base, and the only people still shocked are the pundits who spent years insisting the label lived on the fringe.

A CNN poll conducted by SSRS found that about a third of Democrats and Democratic-leaning adults identify as democratic socialists. They are, per CNN, among the party's staunchest supporters, and also among the most eager to overhaul its leadership and push it further left. The fringe did not just move in. It brought paint samples.

The temptation here is to report the number the internet handed us this week. An October 26 reel, marked as an ad for a policy account, cited a September poll finding that 39% of Democratic voters identify as socialists. That figure did not verify. The polls that did verify say something adjacent but different, and the difference matters: CNN's number is about a third, its population is Democrats plus Democratic-leaning adults, and its field dates are July, not September. A sponsored reel is advocacy, not a poll readout, and this account does not launder one into the other.

So the joke stands on the verified number, and it is a better joke for it. A party does not drift this far by accident. It drifts because the people knocking on the door eventually get handed the keys, and then they redecorate the whole house while the old tenants insist nothing has changed.

The fringe is no longer fringe. It is the base. The base just has not finished painting yet.
